A holiday getaway - just down the road
20 May 2013
From the road, Delfi Restaurant is unassuming and simple. The simple table and chairs outside and even the décor inside of the restaurant play on the idea of a little corner shop in the Mediterranean where the emphasis is on the food and wonderful service.
I have been to this little gem of a place on two occasions and I am always bowled over by how inviting it is. The restaurant is run by two Greek sisters who work mainly in the kitchen and the front of house is run by the constantly-impressive Nadine, who worked with my father back in the days of Grillroom Cafe (opposite Mitchell Park, corner of Innes and Florida Road).
As a guest of Delfi, you are welcomed into a friendly environment which has hosted dinner parties, quiet dates and bridge nights - all on the same evening. What is fantastic about this place is that Nadine runs the entire front of house so she is the only "waiter" on the floor. She constantly impresses all as she remembers your previous drinks order and always recommends fabulous meals to try out.
My favourite dish is their Mezze Platter and even though it is a starter, it is a wonderful assortment of classic Greek tasters (such as dolmades), all of which are beautifully scented and with just the right amount of garlic in their tzatiki!
Although I have not visited Greece, I love the homely Mediterranean feel it exudes with their mixed-and-matched ornaments, flags and plastic grapes.
I cannot wait to go back and would definitely recommend it - and if you're lucky you get to see the group of ladies play a few games of bridge with their (few) bottles of red wine.
I still have to try out their main Grilled Sardines dish - the Portuguese in me longs to try them (Lucky Star just doesn't cut it)!
They are closed on Tuesdays but open for lunch and dinner. Give them a call and book a table as they have always been full to capacity whenever I have been a patron there.
Find them at: 386 Windermere Road, Morningside
Number: 031 312 7032
