Beautiful and Tasty Celebrations
26 January 2013
Hidden away on the top of the Ridge, this beautiful old house is a quick getaway. If you'd like to celebrate a special occasion, be sure to make a reservation at Audacia Manor.
As soon as we drove up to the house, one of the hosts greeted us and offered to put our bottle of sparkling wine on ice whilst we had a drink on the patio. We were directed through the beautiful old house and relaxed for a few minutes before being seated at our table. We were told to book weeks in advance as Audacia are usually hosting banqueting parties and weddings.
The simply set tables worked well the the expanse of patio as you can look over Moses Mabhida Stadium, Sun Coast Casino and the harbour. It really is something to be able to view Durban from such a unique perch.
The leather-bound menus contain the history of Audacia Manor; a concise ala Carte menu; and a varied and expansive wine list. The kitchen was out of stock on a few of the more interesting-looking items on the menu. However, we started with their Asian Fish-Cakes which were absolutely incredible! You could taste the varied spices and fresh corriander, and when you had savoured it all, there was the warm zing of the chilli that remained. Although we had a very nervous new waitress, hereafter, we had great faith in the chef (who is apparently rather new to the establishment).
Before our mains arrived, we were given home-made watermelon sorbet to 'cleanse our palettes'; which was thoroughly enjoyable and we discussed how 'best to make it from fresh watermelon'. For mains I delighted in having their Fillet of Beef served with a spicy lentil ragout, with fresh rocket and steamed veg alongside. My partner had the camembert stuffed chicken breast with beetroot and cranberry jam, on top of flavoursome basil pesto risotto and the same steamed vegetables.
When you book your table be sure to mention the occasion - I was greeted by the cordial manager who wished me well for my birthday and offered us the home-made Berry Parfait which was just the right amount of sweetness to end of a wonderful meal and a delightful evening.
