When Happiness discovered Heaven
23 January 2013
If you live or have been to Durban, you know Wakaberry. For those like myself, the thought of the sickly-sweet so-called yoghurt isn't that amazing. Enter Ci Gusta!
I died and went to heaven. My journey to heaven began when my boyfriend and I wanted to investigate the "new little Italian restaurant on Florida Road" - what we discovered was the grown-up version of Wakaberry. As we entered a joyful little man stood behind the counter with a giant smile on his face and his arms opened wide and exclaimed, "go wild! It's yours!". Having grown up in the hospitality industry I have a biased preference to well-mannered and excellently trained staff. Over the duration of Ci Gusta! visits I am always amazed at how this tiny little Gelato 'corner shop' has staff that really 'live their brand'.
My first taste of deliciousness was their Dark Chocolate. For those who know me, chocolate is 'ok', but if you get me Lindt 85% Dark Chocolate, I will be your eternal friend. This incredible flavour of gelato has retained and delivered a full array of unique and subtle hints of the various cacao beans used, whilst the common sharpness associated with dark chocolate makes way for velvet texture. [If you give me a chance I will eloquently deliver all of the unique aspects to this specific flavour of ice-cream, but then I would not be able to do justice to the others.]
Of all the flavours available, the taste-bud tantalising combinations are as follows:
Ci Gusta! have plain yoghurt and fresh berry smoothies (that are dependent on fresh stock for that day) as well as their most popular gelato falvours in frozen yoghurt form. I recently discovered their Greek Yoghurt (I realised I needed to order something else than Dark Chocolate. Sigh indeed) and it was incredibly tasty and a lovely alternative.
Over the course of our visits, we have advertised this amazing find to anyone who will listen and have always had well-deserved feedback of their visits. Do yourself a favour and be transported back to your childhood where you get excited to try anything (because that's what we all did, tried to maximise how much we could fit into our bowls/cones; except now we focus on flavour).
When you go past, be sure to check out the back of the restaurant as they have a quaint little courtyard and more tables and chairs (with aircon!).

- Dark Chocolate and Pink Grapefruit - Don't be scared of the tart citrus! The two pair incredibly well together and enhance the flavours allowing for you to indulge in gelato that boarders on sorbet.
- Dark Chocolate and Raspberry - I have never had such an incredible berry ice-cream before. Coupled with the unique raspberry "pips", again the tartness of the fruit tastes incredible with Dark Chocolate. I can't wait to try out other fruit/chocolate combinations!
- Salted Caramel and Gianduttio - It may sound weird so that's why you should try it. Salted Caramel delivers the flavour without the sickly-sweetness and the nutty and chocolaty taste of Gianduttio make the two flavours a delightful little treat.
