Real Food at its Prime - two thumbs up for salad for breakfast
26 March 2013
I recently enjoyed a magnificent week away in Cape Town with my first two days spent in Stellenbosch and Franshoek.
After a delightful first day spent on Wine Estates, our dear friend was tasked with finding a place to have breakfast - which was naturally easy for him!
The choice of venue was this wonderfully quirky hot-spot called De Oude Bank Bakkerij, which is behind a set of shops in a small street in Stellenbosch.
Upon entering, I was immediately intrigued by the fridge of artisanal ice-creams and after a few more steps, the aroma of baking bread and freshly brewed coffee hit me. Not in a literal sense but I immediately felt hungry!
We sat at a little table near the wall and it was awesome to see that the chairs that we were sitting on looked like old wooden boxes that had been turned upside down - and they still had their leather handles on each side.

I had decided to try the most unusual and uncommon breakfast choice on the menu and opted for their Seasonal Salad (this probably wasn't a breakfast option but it was on the menu regardless, lucky for me!).
This lucky find included ricotta filled quinoa balls, pickled pears with spiced cranberries on top of baby greens, roasted beetroot, sprinkled with toasted almonds with a light parmesan dressing. Heaven in a bowl!

My only gripe...
Enter the bacon-less Croque Madame.
The only set-back about the place was that they were rather rigid in their meals. If the menu says poached, you can only have your eggs poached (not scrambled) and you can't replace the bacon with something like mushrooms.
